Setting Limits with your Strong Willed Child-Review

Setting Limits with your strong willed child

Yes, this is a review…

I have a strong willed child and after much frustration, I read Setting Limits with Your Strong-Willed Child : Eliminating Conflict by Establishing Clear, Firm, and Respectful Boundaries by Robert MacKenzie. It took me one night to read it from cover to cover and I can happily rate it five stars.

Why does a strong willed child test?

Wouldn’t you love to know? MacKenzie explains that it is in the nature of a strong willed child to test. Once I realized this, my attitude changed. I didn’t take it personally, and I focused on learning how to deal with it.

Child discipline techniques that work

It was as if MacKenzie had met my son and then written this book specifically for me and our needs. Some of the positive discipline techniques he wrote about, such as time-outs and consequences, I had tried, but I had not executed them correctly, or did not follow up, or even worse, I had not been consistent. But now I can discpline in a positive way that avoids confrontation and has actually improved my child’s behavior.

Positive discipline techniques for strong willed children

MacKenzie goes into great detail and offers a lot of examples on his discipline techniques, and for some readers who find his repetitiveness exhausting and redundant, I personally think he drilled it home. I needed that repetition. I needed the various examples that he gave. With so many examples, there is bound to be one that meets your personal situation.

Discipline techniques for all children, with or without a strong will

The discipline techniques that Mackenzie discusses should be used with all children, what ever the age, and with or without a strong will. They work no matter what the level of bad behavior. Having a consistent discipline system is smart for all parents.

I highly recommend this book, and consider it a lifesaver. I also expect to reread it often as a reference.

And there’s one for teachers?

For teachers, I would recommend Setting Limits in the Classroom, Revised: How to Move Beyond the Dance of Discipline in Today’s Classrooms. But not just any teacher. This book is for teachers who understand that all children are different, but they can be managed in one setting without disruption. I have a review on that too.
